Some interesting facts about Valentine's Day...
The legend of St Valentine is said to have pagan roots, coming from the ancient Roman tradition of the festival of 'Lupercali'. It coincided with the festival of rebirth, the life cycle and the celebration of harvests. The story goes that with the advent of the Christian Romans, the 'Lupercali' were replaced by the feast of lovers, to convert one of the most popular pagan rites to the 'new religion' of Christianity.
But why is the festival of lovers dedicated to Saint Valentine? Bishop Valentine dedicated his life to the Christian community during the Roman Empire and died a martyr. Valentine's Day is attributed to him, as he was the first religious man to celebrate the marriage between a Roman legionary and a young Christian girl.
In America, to wish each other a Happy Valentine's Day they say "Be my Valentine". Literally meaning "be my Valentine", it is a way of saying to identify your loved one. Your 'Valentine' can therefore be anyone who deserves your love and a box of chocolate truffles.
